Two Linux Non-profits Announce New Linux-based Mobile Platform

The Linux Foundation and The Limo Foundation have jointly announced the Tizen project, which is an apparent attempt at knocking Google (owner of Android) off its throne.

The Tizen platform will be open-source and cross-architecture, which means it will be able to run on just about any "mobile" device on the market, including netbooks, smartphones, tablets, and even TV's.
It may seem like a longshot that anyone could loosen Android's hold on the market, but some big name companies have already pledged their support for the new platform.

Apparently Intel and Samsung are both dropping support for their current operating systems and adopting Tizen in an attempt to free themselves from Google. Tizen will support HTML5 and allow developers to more easily create cross-platform applications.

Keep in mind that The LiMo foundation and The Linux Foundation were both founded by some very powerful international companies including Motorola, Samsung, IBM, and Intel. With companies of this caliber backing it, this is not something to be taken lightly.

Could Tizen be the future Android-killer? We will have to wait and see in 2012 when the first SDK's come out.
