Linux Made To Support London Stock Exchange

Although this is sure to be a case of stating the obvious, stock exchanges are pretty important things. They often help determine who gets rich and who becomes poor, and even when people aren't buying and selling on a regular basis, they influence retirement accounts. So it's probably good news for Linux that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is being used to support the London Stock Exchange's trading platform.

An official announcement on the matter explained, "SUSE Linux Enterprise Server will help to increase the Millennium Exchange system's capacity to cope with high-volume trading. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is a highly reliable, scalable and secure server operating system built to power both physical and virtual mission-critical workloads. With this foundation, enterprises can efficiently deliver business services, enable secure networks and manage heterogeneous IT resources."

Sean McCarry, UK Country Manager at Novell, then added, "The London Stock Exchange is one of the most prestigious and most recognized exchanges in the world, so we are proud to be the technology partner of choice for this important deployment."

Indeed, the people behind the Exchange showed a lot of faith in Linux by selecting it, and that won't go unnoticed. The London Stock Exchange is over 200 years old and counts as the fourth-largest exchange in the world.

Many other folks in the financial world may now choose to follow suit, or at least run an experiment or two.

Unfortunately, the transition hasn't been without problems; different glitches have affected some brokers. But the blame hasn't been placed on Linux itself, and in any event, everything's sure to be worked out in the near future.
