Karmic Koala Biting Some Would-Be Users

The Linux community appears to have received a rather unpleasant surprise with the release of Ubuntu 9.10 (otherwise known as Karmic Koala). Installations aren't going so well, as early adopters are reporting a wide variety of minor errors and near-catastrophic problems.
It's often best to not get the very first of something. The first few batches of ice any freezer makes are likely to contain a little in the way of dust, for example. And the first batch of cars off an assembly line may squeak and rattle a bit more than average.
Unfortunately, Karmic Koala-related problems go a bit beyond cloudy drinks and a rear door that needs to be stuffed with foam. Gavin Clarke reported, "[M]ore than a fifth of people upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 have reported issues they can't fix, according to an Ubuntuforums.org poll here."
Flickering or dead screens, lack of hard drive recognition, data loss, and all other sorts of difficulties have cropped up.
Clarke noted, "Only around 10 per cent of those upgrading or installing reported a completely flawless experience."
So hang back a little bit if you were thinking of giving Karmic Koala a try. The odds of having a trouble-free time seem to be pretty low right now.
