IDC: Linux Looking Good In The Long (And Short) Term

Linux developers are going to enjoy a steady stream of work for the foreseeable future, according to a new report from IDC. IDC predicted that the Linux operating system will generate increasing amounts of revenue through at least 2013, and even tossed out a prediction involving the term "billion," too.

Here, as laid out in an official statement, are the stats: "worldwide revenue from Linux operating system software grew by 23.4% from 2007 to 2008, and that growth will be followed by a 2008-2013 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.9%. With this growth, worldwide Linux operating systems revenue will cross $1 billion for the first time in 2012, growing to $1.2 billion by 2013."

Not bad, right? Especially given the recession that we've been stuck in and have yet to completely escape. Double-digit growth is something that's really to be admitted.

Anyway, if you'd like more specifics, IDC determined that Red Hat and Novell accounted for 94.5 percent of Linux operating systems revenue in 2008, so they'll deserve the lion's share of credit for all of the money moving around.

Hopefully that info will allow you to specialize in some way and be even more sure to get a piece of the $1.2 billion pie.
