Intel Absorbs Linux Developer OpenedHand

Intel could have put out a press release, or had an exec spout off in front of a few cameras. But nothing says "we're interested in something" quite like an acquisition, and the large corporation has proven its interest in Linux by buying the mobile Linux developer OpenedHand.
OpenedHand "will join the Intel Open Source Technology Center and will focus on the development of the Moblin Software Platform, the optimized software stack for Intel Atom processors," according to a statement on the UK-based company's homepage.
The rest of OpenedHand's work isn't getting tossed in the garbage, either, since "Intel will continue supporting open source projects currently led by OpenedHand staff such as Clutter and Matchbox projects, and in most cases, will accelerate these projects as they become an integral part of Moblin."
One thing that remains unknown about the arrangement is the acquisition price - Intel might love Linux to the tune of only $10,000 or a full $10,000,000 for all either side is willing to say. Still, as Slashdot commenter dotancohen pointed out, some of Intel's competitors may feel the need to copy its move, which would be good for individuals and companies knowledgeable about the operating system.
Longer-term success in terms of Linux market seems possible, too, if whatever Intel and OpenedHand cook up for mobile devices becomes popular enough.
