Linux Developers Rejoice - NYSE Invests In Linux Systems

If there is any other sign that would indicate that Linux has reached a tipping point in terms of popularity and maturity, it is that the staid, stolid, and conservative New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is investing heavily in Linux systems to power its new Hybrid Stock Exchange system.
Linux developers rejoice, this is one big Linux deal.
If anyone has ever worked in banking, they know that it is a very conservative group to work with. They make decisions that are in the interests of making money, everything boils down to a bottom line somewhere in an accounting sheet. If Linux according to the NYSE is mature enough, stable enough, and has a lower ROI than any other product out there, this will have a major influence on the Linux market, especially in the banking industry.
The New York Stock Exchange is investing heavily in x86-based Linux systems and blade servers as it builds out the NYSE Hybrid Market trading system that it launched last year. Flexibility and lower cost are among the goals. But one of the things that NYSE Euronext CIO Steve Rubinow says he most wants from the new computing architecture is technology independence. "What we want is to be able to take advantage of technology advances when they happen," Rubinow said. "We're trying to be as independent of any technologies as we can be." Source: NY Times
As an interesting development in how Linux is penetrating
markets, this is going to be a case study that many people will
want to read. While they are not as interested in virtualization from a latency viewpoint, they are rolling individual systems with a generic Linux that can be modified to do the things they want to do, as they do them, and take advantages of changes in technology. That alone is a powerful statement when it comes to selling Linux systems.
It will be interesting to see what the response is from other companies in regards to the adoption of Linux in the banking industry. As the major banks switch to different kinds of systems, the opportunity to up sell services and support for those systems becomes very important. The best way to make money from Linux is to sell services, and has proven to be a good model for Red Hat and Novell.
