Linux sales help Oracle database catch IBM, Gartner finds
Oracle Corp. gained ground in the worldwide relational database market last year to draw roughly level with IBM, thanks in part to Oracle's strong performance in the fast-growing Linux segment, according to new figures from Gartner Inc.

Microsoft Corp. also had a good year, increasing new license sales by 18% to be the fastest-growing database vendor. It remained in third place, however, behind longtime leaders Oracle and IBM.

Linux lab lays off programmers
The Open Source Development Labs, the organization that employs Linux leader Linus Torvalds, has laid off nearly a sixth of its staff as part of a shift to new priorities.

The group cut nine of its 57 staff and contractor positions, Chief Executive Stuart Cohen confirmed Monday. The cuts affected several programmers who worked on the open-source operating system as well as staff in sales, marketing, business development and internal computer operations.

IBM, Red Hat To Boost Linux Education
"Open Source skills are highly regarded by employers. This reflects the widespread adoption of Linux in the mainstream enterprise," said Peter Childers, vice president of Global Learning Services at Red Hat.

IBM announced Tuesday it will work with Red Hat to bring universities up to speed in teaching college students open source skills.

Grasshopper hops code from Visual Studio .Net to Linux–for free
Mainsoft launched a free Visual Studio .Net plug-in called Grasshopper and a developer community forum for creating Web applications and Web services that run on Linux, Windows and Java platforms. Formally titled Visual MainWin for J2EE Developer Edition, Grasshopper benefits from two years of collaboration by Mainsoft and the Mono team on Mono’s ASP.NET, ADO.NET, XML, Visual Basic and .NET class libraries class libraries–about 3.5 million lines of code, according to Mono leader Miguel de Icaza. The Mono Project, sponsored by Novell, is developing an open source version of Microsoft’s .Net platform that allows developers to cfreate Linux and cross-platform applications. With Grasshopper, .Net developers can contribute class libraries, bug fixes and other improvements enhancements that can be used in Mono and Visual MainWin for J2EE.
